How it works

From your address to side-by-side quotes, with your number kept private.

You answer a few questions once. Licensed installers compete for your project with written quotes, and nobody gets your contact details until you choose.

Overview

  1. Step 01

    Enter your address

Start with your home address. A few quick questions about your bill, roof and plans come next.

  2. Step 02

    We measure your roof

Imagery and solar data map your roof's size, pitch, direction and shade, then estimate how many panels fit. You can adjust it.

  3. Step 03

    Installers bid

Up to 4 licensed local installers get a de-identified project profile and send written quotes. They don't see your name, phone, email or street address.

  4. Step 04

    You compare and choose

See every quote side by side on the same assumptions. Pick one, and only then do we share your contact details with that installer.

Step by step

What happens, and when

About three minutes for you. The rest happens while you get on with your day.

  1. Step 1: Enter your address

We look up your home on the map. Your address is used to find your roof and the installers who serve your area, and it never goes into a web address or to installers before you choose one.

  2. Step 2: We measure your roof

Using aerial and satellite imagery and solar data for your address, we estimate your roof's area, the direction and pitch of each section, shade, and how many panels could fit. You'll see the result and can adjust it.

If we can't see your roof clearly, you can enter your home's size and we'll estimate from that. Either way it's an estimate, not a quote or offer.

  3. Step 3: Answer a few questions

About two minutes of questions installers need to quote accurately:

    • Whether you own the home, and the type of home
    • Your typical monthly electric bill and utility
    • Roof age and shade
    • When you'd like to go solar
    • How you'd like to pay: cash, loan, lease, PPA, or not sure
    • Battery, EV and HOA details
    • Your credit range, if you want to share it. It's optional and self-reported, "Prefer not to say" is always an option, and we never check credit.
  4. Step 4: Tell us how to reach you

Your name, email and phone, so we can send your quotes and your private dashboard link. Your phone number is only ever shared with the installer you choose. We text you a one-time code to confirm your number. Other calls and texts from us are optional: leave the box unchecked and we'll stick to email and your dashboard.

  5. Step 5: Request quotes, or not yet

We show you exactly what installers will see before anything is sent. Choose "Request quotes" to send your de-identified project to up to 4 licensed installers near you, or "Not now" to save it and decide later from your dashboard.

  6. Step 6: Installers quote

Each installer gets the same project profile and a set window to respond, usually about two days. They submit structured quotes (price, equipment, warranties, production, financing terms) so every offer can be compared on the same footing. Each installer prices independently; nobody negotiates on your behalf.

  7. Step 7: Compare side by side

You see every quote with the installer's name, license number and the date we last verified it, ranked by our published method. We call out dealer fees, high escalators and production claims that don't add up, in plain English.

  8. Step 8: Choose, connect, and decide

When you pick an installer, you choose what they get: phone and email, or email only. Only then do we send your contact details, to that installer alone. They'll confirm the details with a site visit before you sign anything.

In California, your installer must give you the Solar Energy System Disclosure Document and the CPUC Solar Consumer Protection Guide (opens in a new tab) before you sign, and you can cancel within 3 business days (5 if you're 65 or older).

Privacy by design

What installers see before you choose

Enough to quote accurately. Not enough to know who you are.

They see

  • Your city and ZIP code
  • Rounded roof measurements and the direction, pitch and size of each roof section
  • Rounded yearly electricity use and a monthly bill range
  • Your timeline, and your battery and financing preferences
  • Your self-reported credit range, as a broad band

They never see, until you choose them

  • Your name
  • Your phone number or email
  • Your street address
  • Satellite imagery of your home or your roof's outline

Installers also agree by contract not to try to figure out who you are. Installers you don't choose never get your contact details at all.

Our method

What “best deal” means

The same rules for every quote and every installer, published here so you can check our work.

How each quote is scored (default weights)

  • Lifetime cost per useful kWh

    40%

Everything you'd pay over 25 years (price, loan or lease payments, escalators, upkeep) divided by the electricity you can actually use. Cash, loan, lease and PPA are compared on the same footing.

  • Installer reputation

    20%

Active license, years in business, install volume, certifications and verified reviews, weighted so a handful of perfect reviews doesn't beat hundreds of good ones.

  • Equipment

    15%

Panel and inverter warranties, warranted output after 25 years, and battery warranty and capacity when a battery is quoted.

  • Warranties and guarantees

    15%

Workmanship and roof-leak warranties, and whether the installer guarantees how much the system will produce.

  • Production credibility

    5%

We check each production claim against our own estimate for your roof. Claims far above it lose points.

  • Timeline

    5%

How quickly the installer expects to finish, and whether they quoted on time.

A quote can't be ranked best if:

  • It subtracts the expired federal homeowner tax credit (Section 25D) from a system you'd own.
  • The loan amount is higher than the cash price and the difference isn't disclosed.
  • The installer's contractor license is missing or not active.

We also flag high escalators, large dealer fees, inflated production and prices far from the local market, in plain English, right on the quote.

How we get paid

Installers pay us a fee when you connect with one. That never changes the order. Our ranking code doesn't read what any installer pays, and we don't sell placement.
